Il suono dei pianeti

23.May – 04.August 2025

Park and Foyer of the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE, the Gustav Mahler Cultural Centre, Toblach

At the heart of a landscape that once inspired Gustav Mahler to compose his celebrated Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), artist Wolfgang Semmelrock brings the site itself to life through sound with his sculptural Klangpostkarten — Sound Postcards.

These works were created as part of the PlanetenKlang projects between 2020 and 2025. At the centre of this poetic gravitational field of the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE in the park stands a sculptural sound body, forming the focal point around which the other works unfold.

Together with his mascot Alban, the KlangHelm (Sound Helmet) and photographs from the PlanetenKlang projects presented inside the Cultural Centre, Semmelrock creates an immersive artistic experience that brings together sculpture, sound, space and participation.

Elements of the sculptural installation reach back to the origins of PlanetenKlang in 2018. It was then that Gustav Mahler’s composing hut in Maiernigg, Carinthia, became the setting for a Gesamtkunstwerk in which art, landscape and sound merged into a single experience and visitors themselves became part of a social sound sculpture.

In Toblach, visitors are once again invited to enter the expanding universe of PlanetenKlang. Photographs and works presented inside the Gustav Mahler Cultural Centre provide further perspectives on the project and its evolution.

A particularly distinctive position is occupied by an artwork conceived both to be seen and heard: the KlangHelm. Developed by interdisciplinary artist Wolfgang Semmelrock specifically for PlanetenKlang, this wearable sound sculpture transforms listening into a physical and spatial experience.

PlanetenKlang can also be understood as an invitation to reflect on our own responsibility for the planet we inhabit. It suggests that each of us can contribute to its future — through what we imagine, what we create, and who we choose to be.

The planet resonates.

At the beginning of the exhibition in May, two workshops will be held with the artist, followed by another workshop in July as part of the music festival. The workshops will be offered in German and Italian.
